The Institution of Structural Engineers
is recognised internationally as the professional body for structural
engineering. Founded in 1908 and granted a Royal Charter in 1934, the
Institution now has a total membership of 22,000. It is an authorised
and nominated body of the Engineering Council and a founder member of
the Construction Industry Council.
Students and graduates can enjoy membership of the Institution but only after training and passing a rigorous test of competence can they become entitled to the designations Chartered Engineer or Incorporated Engineer. Chartered Engineers of the Institution are recognised by the designatory
letters ‘FIStructE’ or ‘MIStructE’ and Incorporated
Engineers by ‘AMIStructE’.
